| The HANDS program (Helping Associates Nurture and Develop Skills) at Tanners Creek Horticultural Services has been developed for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and developmental disabilities who desire a year round day program designed to improve their quality of life through participation in horticultural and recreational activities. Many activities take advantage of the therapeutic benefits provided through the purposeful use of plants and plant-related activities such as maintaining community gardens at the Virginia Zoological Park, working in raised bed gardens growing herbs, vegetables and flowers, and various nature based art and crafts projects.
Given Tanners Creek's location next to the Virginia Zoological Park, associates have the opportunity to visit the grounds to see the animal exhibits and to meander through the zoo's gardens as often as they would like. The HANDS program also spends a significant amount of time in other life enriching community based activities. All activities provided through Tanners Creek focus on growth in independence increasing social and communication skills, improving self help skills, and improving coordination and mobility through activities. This is achieved by training in the areas of socialization, communication, behavior development, personal care, aerobic exercise and community access.
The hours of program operation are offered from 8:00am to 1:30pm, Monday through Friday.
