53 office volunteers spruce up camp that serves disabled
By Kristi Kastrounis
The Virginian-Pilot
The directors of Civitan Acres, a 14-acre camp and wellness center that serves mentally and physically disabled adults, say maintaining the property is a never-ending task.
That’s why they were so grateful last week when 53 volunteers from HSBC, an international financial services company with offices in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, deployed to the Old Cedar Road complex to landscape the grounds, repaint cabins and lay brick pavers to improve wheelchair access. The helping hands were part of the 16th annual United Way Day of Caring, which was held locally and across the nation Sept. 7.
Civitan Acres was one of eight projects in Chesapeake,
and the HSBC employees were among 179 volunteers involved in the dozen good deeds. The work was organized by the United Way of South Hampton Roads to help member agencies.
Civitan Acres is a United Way agency and is not a publicly funded camp, said Dave Wilber, senior vice president and chief operations officer of Eggleston Services, which manages the camp and oversees the property.
This summer, Civitan Acres hosted 180 total campers during seven, one-week sessions that involved overnight stays. It also offers services from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays year-round.
“The camp uses a lot of our funds from United Way to provide scholarships for campers,” Wilber said.
Many of the adults who attend Civitan Acres come from low-income families and can’t afford to participate as weekly campers or in an overnight weeklong camp during the summer, he said. Money to operate the camp year-round is raised primarily through two events each May – a Cinco de Mayo celebration and a golf tournament.
Megan Hurt, the camp’s general manager and a certified therapeutic recreation specialist, said the best way for the community to support Civitan Acres is to attend those fundraisers. It’s nice, too, when volunteers like those from HSBC show up periodically to help.
It’s been three years since the camp has had Day of Caring volunteers show up there, said Hurt, who planned and prepped for the projects by providing materials, lunches and drinks for the volunteers.
HSBC spreads its efforts among a variety of projects and doesn’t limit its volunteerism to one day a year.
“Every year we do this, and we have no shortage of volunteers,” said Shane Herrell, senior manager of e-business marketing at HSBC. “If you went to any of our other offices, you’d see the same thing.”
HSBC also has participated in Clean the Bay Day, Paint Your Heart Out, Junior Achievement and collected school supplies for Southwestern Elementary School.
“Being good corporate stewards is a big thing in our company,” said HSBC employee Maggie Hogan.
Other volunteer projects
Civitan Acres was one of eight project sites in Chesapeake for the United Way’s Day of Caring. Volunteers from the following organizations also helped at these United Way agencies:
• Southeastern Virginia Training Center – 10 volunteers from BAE and 20 from Checkered Flag Motor Car Co.
• YMCA (North Greenbrier) – 10 volunteers from Chesapeake RDHA and 15 volunteers from LTD Management
• Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake – 4 volunteers from City of Chesapeake and 20 volunteers from N.Y. Times
• Children’s Harbor – 15 volunteers from Sentara
• Girls, Inc. – 10 volunteers from Sentara
• Chesapeake Division of Social Services – 10 volunteers from Target (Hickory)
• Chesapeake Care Clinic – 15 volunteers from Chesapeake General Hospital

Congratulations to Angela West on her recent graduation from Old Dominion University. Angela, 22, originally came to Eggleston as a participant in our Civitan Acres summer camp. After reading an article about college graduates with disabilities she decided to attend college and work for her degree. Once she set her sights on her major, Therapeutic Recreation, she returned to Civitan Acres to do her internship. She has been terrific to work with, and always inspiring. Sheryn Milton, ODU's director of disabled services, said: "What she's done has been amazing. It's not just what she's done, it's how she's done it. What she has given back to us has been incredible."
We wish Angela the best of luck in her furure endevours.

Michael Parker named Eggleston’s Associate of the Year

Michael Parker was named Eggleston’s Associate of the Year during the 2006 Annual Meeting and Board of Directors meeting held on October 26TH. Board members, Eggleston staff, and Michael’s friends and family members applauded as Michael was presented with a certificate of recognition, and a check for $100.
Michael began attending the day program at Civitan Acres a little more than a year ago. He has also been through many life changing events during this time including the loss of a parent, and moving from the home he grew up in into a residential facility. Through it all, Michael showed great strength and arrived each day at Civitan with a smile on his face, ready to participate in whatever each new day brought him.
Civitan Acres staff members have noticed that Michael has increased his communication skills, and is becoming much more social. He has also improved his fine motor skills and now enjoys participating in arts and crafts.
Michael’s new goal is to receive a motorized wheelchair that will allow him to move freely without the assistance of anyone.
Civitan Acres recieves their Three Year Accreditation from the American Camping Association
This summer, Civitan Acres went through a stringent review of their camp and vacation services by the American Camping Association. Congrats to Meghan, Karen and the Civitan Staff for demonstrating their commitment to the ACA accreditation standards. Like other accreditations we seek, going through the ACA process helps us to strengthen our services. ACA Accreditation educates camp directors in the administration of key aspects of camp operation, program quality, and the health and safety of campers and staff. The ACA establishes guidelines for needed policies, procedures, and practices and assists the public in selecting camps that meet industry-accepted and government-recognized standards.

Tanners Creek Horticultural Services and Creekside hold successful Grand Opening April 28-30, 2006
The weather was perfect, spirits were high and sales were brisk which made for a hugely successful Grand Opening! The purpose of the event was to publicize the move of Tanners Creek Horticultural Services from the Granby Street location to the current location at 110 LaValette Ave. This new location makes us the largest Garden Center in Norfolk. We’ve also introduced the public to the Creekside Café, The first Garden Center Café in Southside Hampton Roads!
Customers attending the grand opening were given 10% off all merchandise. To help educate the public, we had representatives from Wild Delight bird feed, Bonide garden chemicals, Rich Earth soil enhancement, the Hampton Roads Butterfly Society and literature from Nauticus and NOAA. Local artists were on hand to display their crafts and representatives from the Norfolk Botanical Gardens and the Virginia Zoo were in attendance as well.
Children’s activities were provided by our Tanners Creek staff, and we conducted over a dozen raffle drawings and free giveaways throughout the weekend! Musical entertainment was provided by Lawrence Lambert of Big Wide Grin and Serenity Now.
