Eggleston Matters: August 2020

Alternate textAugust marks the birth of Eggleston – 65 years ago. And, while remarkable milestones have been achieved for adults with disabilities (both in society and at Eggleston), there is still much work to be done to create opportunities, equity,  access, and resources.

Affordable and accessible housing is one of the many critical issues facing those we serve and their families. As the tsunami of aging family caregivers that will no longer be able to provide for their loved ones approaches- we are dedicated to finding solutions for residential supports.

So as we celebrate this anniversary with you, our loyal donors and community leaders, we do so with a renewed sense of energy and commitment to our community and the work ahead.

Thank you for your continued investment and belief in Eggleston’s mission. Read more about the history of Eggleston and learn how you can get involved.

Sincerely,

Tasha Jones

Eggleston is grateful for continued support of KOVAR, a Knights of Columbus Charity serving persons with intellectual disabilities.

KOVAR President John Cochran presented Eggleston with two plaque awards –  One recognizing the many contributions of CEO Paul J. Atkinson, Sr. who has dedicated his life’s work to empowering adults with disabilities; and the second for Eggleston’s work to create more jobs for people with disabilities in Hampton Roads through a KOVAR capacity building grant.

A Dream Come True for Trey

Trey, a resident at one of the six homes that Eggleston manages and supports, had his dream come true for his birthday. Knowing Trey’s love and abundance of knowledge for all things weather, the staff was able to have Trey filmed as a weather forecaster for his 33rd birthday.

“We go above and beyond for birthdays and holidays for our residents. In many cases like Trey, we are often the only family they have, so birthdays are a big deal around here.” Read More >>

Volunteers Needed for the Community Garden this Fall

Fall is quickly approaching, and we need your help!

Eggleston’s Community Garden is excited to welcome volunteers to do their part in diminishing food deserts in the Norfolk region. Volunteers are needed for all aspects of the gardening and farming process. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been a farmer all of your life or you have never picked up a cultivator (yes, we’ll explain what that is and how to use it!). Our staff of experts will guide the process and create a safe environment for everyone to enjoy giving back to the community. Have a lot of experience? You can even “Adopt a Row” and work independently on your very own crop. We’ll supply the dirt and the water!

Contact gardencenter@egglestonservices.org with any questions or to register to volunteer as an individual or small group.
