At Eggleston Services, we empower people with intellectual disabilities through education, training and employment opportunities. We are also working to expand our inclusive housing initiative.

Eddie Vedder was kind enough to donate this Fender Squier Telecaster through his friend and local advocate for children & adults with intellectual disabilities, Carine McCandless. Carine is a Va Beach resident and mother of two girls, her youngest has Down Syndrome. Carine & Ed became pals while he was creating the soundtrack for Into the Wild, the 2007 film about Carine’s brother, Chris McCandless.

The face of the guitar is signed by the entire band, including Pearl Jam’s newest member, keyboardist Boom Gaspar. Vedder personalized the back of the guitar with some lyrics from “Rise”, the 4th track from Into the Wild. This is a one time opportunity to acquire such a rare collector’s item.

The guitar will be on display at AoRM’s 2nd Annual Oceanfront Rock Fest to Benefit Eggleston.

Saturday May 21st, 2016 – Opening band kicks off at 12pm, 24th St. Stage Park, Va Beach VA 23451

Deadline to enter online is May 20th, 2016. Don’t miss out on this exclusive campaign! Current estimated chances of winning are 1 in 250!

The winning name will be drawn on May 22nd, 2016. Please note: Winners outside of the Tidewater VA area will be responsible for costs to ship the guitar via UPS Ground.

On Saturday, April 23 Eggleston provided Shredding and Recycling services for the Annual City of Virginia Beach Earth Day event. The event was held at Mount trashmore Park.

Attendees were able explore ways to make our world a better place through educational exhibits and activities. Attendees brought old electronics, outdated child safety seats, documents to be shredded, old car batteries, leftover paint and other hazardous household waste to the AAA recycling zone. They shopped at the green market, enjoyed live music and children’s activities!

An estimated 8000 people attended the event!

Eggleston secured and shred over 4,600 pounds of material at our secure facility located on Military Highway. The material was later pulverized and recycled.

If you are interested in our shredding services contact Robert Hart at rhart@egglestonservices.org

Eggleston extends its condolences to the family of Don Mac Keil who passed away on March 22, 2016. Don served for many years on our board of directors and was a passionate advocate for persons with disabilities and taught students with disabilities in the Norfolk public school system.

“Don helped improve the lives of thousands of people with disabilities and their families. We are grateful for his many years of service to our organization and the community.” – Paul Atkinson, President & CEO

You can read his obituary bellow.

Donald L. Mac Keil, U.S. Navy Retired, passed away at home March 22, 2016. He was 82.

Chief Mac Keil was known to family, friends and colleagues for his compassion, kindness, love of baseball and college sports, and most of all, his sense of humor, which he unfurled at every occasion possible, even at medical appointments on the day he died. No one was safe from his barbs, especially telemarketers to his home. He will be sorely missed.

Born in Morristown, N.J, Don lived in Norfolk nearly 50 years during and following a 32-year career in the Navy, at the end of which he pioneered a detail helping parents of developmentally disabled children in the public schools. He served briefly as director of the then-Louise W. Eggleston Center in Norfolk, and for many years on its board, where he remains President Emeritus.

For many years after, he taught students with severe disabilities at both Maury High School and Norview Middle School. And he spent many years in retirement pursuing his love of family, old movies, books, crossword puzzles, old friends and new ones at the Fresenius Medical Care Center.

He is survived by Patricia, his wife of nearly 58 years; his two sons, Sean and Brian, all of Norfolk; his brother, Lee of Florida, and numerous family members, friends and former colleagues.

A viewing is set for Sunday, March 27 at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave, Norfolk, from 5 pm until 7 pm. Family and friends also can gather at H.D. Oliver on Monday, March 28 at 10 am, with a service at 11, and burial following at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, family is asking that donations be made to two of Don’s favorite causes. Checks made payable to the Therapeutic Recreation Advisory Committee and mailed to 5413 Douglas St., Norfolk, 23509, will fund scholarships for people with disabilities to take part in the educational and social activities the center offers, Or online donations can be made in Don’s name to www.egglestonservices.org, to provide education, training, employment and life enhancement opportunities to people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.hdoliver.com.
