Eggleston today announced its participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual awareness campaign that takes place each October. The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. This year’s theme is “InclusionWorks.”

The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
“By fostering a culture that embraces individual differences, including disabilities, businesses profit by having a wider variety of tools to confront challenges,” said Jennifer Sheehy, deputy assistant secretary of labor for disability employment policy. “Our nation’s most successful companies proudly make inclusion a core value. They know that inclusion works. It works for workers, it works for employers, it works for opportunity, and it works for innovation.”

Reflecting this year’s theme, throughout the month, Eggleston will be engaging in a variety of activities to educate the public on disability employment issues and its commitment to an inclusive work culture. These efforts include tours of several of Eggleston’s facilities employing people with disabilities.

“Eggleston is proud to be a part of this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” said Paul Atkinson, President & CEO. “We want to spread the important message that we value the diverse perspectives, including those of individuals with disabilities.”
Employers and employees in all industries can learn more about how to participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month and ways they can promote its messages — during October and throughout the year — by visiting www.dol.gov/ndeam

The Fourteenth Annual Day for People with disABILITIES at the Virginia Zoological Park will occur May 21, 2016. Last year, thousands of citizens attended the event and this year’s event will be just as successful. We expect hundreds of individuals including service providers, people with disabilities, and interested family members to attend the event. As always, admission is free to any person with a disability and one caregiver.

The goal of the event is to provide resource information and a leisure experience to residents of the Hampton Roads community with a disABILITY, temporary impairment, or health condition, with the hope that people will find a new product or service, learn from the experience of others, and gain new living, advocacy or job skills. The event includes a full day of exhibits under the theme of “All Aboard” to include a public safety expo, Virginia Zoo discovery carts and animal ambassadors, children’s activities, inflatables, the Hurrah Players, TRDance Center’s Adaptive Dance, and Meet Mark Twain of the Virginia Stage Company.

For questions regarding the event, contact Cathy Orletsky at the Therapeutic Recreation Center at 441-1764 or catherine.orletsky@norfolk.gov.day-for-disabilities

Eggleston employees and President/CEO Paul Atkinson appeared yesterday on the Hampton Roads Show to talk about our upcoming OK5K run. Watch their appearance below, see everyone there!

Preston lives in the Sawyer House on the campus of the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins center. He enjoyed a recent trip to the Piccadilly buffet although he and others in his residential home often cook together, most recently cooking a chocolate pie.

“I love puzzles” says Preston “if they are hard I try to be patient until I get it done right”. Preston loves to walk although he has arthritis, he does not let it keep him from his exercise. Preston also likes using his tablet to play angry birds and other games, and volunteers to bring food to people through the local Meals on Wheels program.
