Salute to our Armed Forces Veterans

Every November 11th, our nation recognizes our countries veterans for their service and sacrifice. At Eggleston, we felt these hard working individuals deserved a bit more. So, we put together a week long celebration across the organization for our veteran employees. We sincerely hope our colleagues at Eggleston who are veterans felt the support and recognition from all of us during this time of celebration. This is just a small gesture to pause and recognize the selfless service and sacrifices of our Armed Forces.

As we have concluded this period of recognition, let us all offer a heartfelt salute of thanks to those who fought and sacrificed for our country to protect the freedoms of our great nation. Without their bravery and compromises, we would not be here to thank veterans today. While rejoicing and basking in the glory of our country, don’t forget to say a silent thank you to all those brave warriors who made it possible.

Veterans, our Eggleston colleagues, we thank you today and every day! We salute you! We appreciate you!

Thank you to Captain Janet Lomax, US Navy Retired and Master Chief Petty Officer Gene Garland, US Navy Retired for being our guest speakers at our luncheon event. Also thank you to American Legion Tidewater Post 327, Norfolk, Virginia for attending and serving as our color guard for the event.

A well-tended lawn is a source of pride for many homeowners, providing a lush, thriving space to enjoy year-round. But when winter approaches, it’s crucial to prepare your lawn for the colder months to ensure it bounces back beautifully in the spring. Let’s explore winterizing your lawn with Eggleston’s advice and services, including eco-friendly alternatives if you prefer to align your gardening practices with sustainable values.

Essential Lawn Prep Steps for Winter

Lawn prep for winter is essential for maintaining its health and beauty when the warmer days return. If you’re wondering how to prepare your lawn for winter, by focusing on key tasks like clearing, fertilizing, and aerating, you’ll set the stage for a pristine yard next season.

Clearing Leaves and Debris

One of the first steps in preparing your lawn for winter is deciding what to do with leaves and debris. Traditional methods involve breaking down debris, raking leaves, and bagging them for pickup. This keeps your lawn tidy and prevents mold from developing under wet leaves.

Alternatively, consider mulching leaves directly into your lawn or using them as natural mulch for garden beds. This eco-friendly option enriches the soil naturally and reduces waste.

Fertilization Choices

Person spreading fertilizer on a lawn to prepare it for winter, highlighting essential winter lawn care tips for maintaining healthy grass during the colder months.

Fertilizing your lawn is critical to protect it during the winter months. According to the University of Florida, traditional fertilizers with high potassium content are designed specifically for winter use, influencing root growth, and water and stress tolerances.

If you’re seeking an eco-friendlier approach, organic or slow-release fertilizers nourish the soil without risking chemical runoff.

Aeration and Overseeding

One of the best lawn care practices for winter that isn’t always considered is aerating your lawn. Aeration allows better airflow and nutrient access to your lawn’s roots, which is essential for healthy growth. After aerating, spread grass seed on your lawn to ensure thicker grass coverage come spring. For a sustainable spin, opt for native or drought-resistant grass seeds, which reduce water usage while maintaining a resilient lawn.

Preparing Garden Beds and Shrubs for Winter

Alongside lawn care, it’s important to prepare your garden beds and shrubs for the winter months. Proper mulching and pruning ensure that plants are protected in colder weather and ready to thrive once temperatures start to rise.

Mulching Choices

Close-up of various types of mulch used for winter lawn care, showcasing how mulching leaves can protect soil and plants during colder seasons while improving lawn health.

Traditional mulching involves using commercial wood chips or bagged mulch to protect plant roots from frost. This is an effective way to insulate garden beds and regulate soil moisture.

Alternatively, try sustainable mulch options like fallen leaves, pine needles, or shredded branches from your yard. These materials reduce waste and enrich the soil naturally.

Pruning Shrubs and Trees

Pruning shrubs and trees in late fall prevents damage and helps shape them for spring growth. This traditional practice maintains plant health and appearance.

Don’t over trim your shrubs and trees. This provides shelter for birds and beneficial insects throughout the winter, helping to maintain a healthy yard while promoting biodiversity.

Lawn Equipment Care for Winter

Proper care and storage of lawn equipment are essential over winter to extend their lifespan and ensure they’re ready for action come spring.

Cleaning and Storing Tools

Clean and sharpen your lawn tools before storing them for the winter. This prevents rust and ensures that your equipment performs optimally when you need it next. Store tools in a dry, sheltered place to protect them from the elements.

Winter Equipment Maintenance

Prepare lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and other equipment for winter storage by draining fuel, checking oil levels, and covering them with protective tarps. Taking these steps reduces the risk of damage and extends the life of your machinery.

Maintaining your existing lawn equipment is not only cheaper, costing on average $200 a year, but it reduces potential costs for new equipment. According to Home Guide, the average cost for a new push lawn mower is $100-$500, and a riding lawn mower could cost you as much as $5,000.

Planning for a Great Start in Spring with Eggleston

By planning ahead, you can ensure your yard is vibrant and healthy once warmer weather returns. Consider both traditional and eco-conscious approaches when designing your spring landscape or planning for seasonal harvests.

Lawn and Garden Planning

Think about any landscaping updates you’d like to make and mark your calendar for early spring tasks. You may need to refresh your flower beds or plant vegetables, herbs, and flowers that need to overwinter.

For a more eco-conscious approach, consider incorporating native plants, pollinator-friendly blooms, and water-saving practices into your garden design.

Is there an old car taking up space in your driveway or garage? If you’re considering parting ways with a vehicle you no longer need or want, donating it can be rewarding.

However, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and approach this process cautiously due to the potential for car donation scams. This guide will help you handle vehicle donations, avoid car donation scams, and ensure your donation contributes to life-changing opportunities for adults with diverse abilities.

Why Make a Vehicle Donation?

Donating a vehicle you no longer need or have space for is an attractive option for many reasons:

Simplicity: It’s a hassle-free alternative to selling your car privately, which takes time, energy, and potentially money for repairs.

Tax Benefits: Vehicle donations qualify for tax deductions, offering financial incentives.

Community Impact: Choosing a trustworthy organization, like Eggleston, ensures your donation supports impactful programs and services in your community.

How to Spot and Avoid Common Scams

To protect yourself from car donation fraud and maximize the impact of your donation, be aware of common scams by using these safe car donation tips.

Fraudulent organizations: Posing as legitimate charities, these scammers often use professional-looking websites or similar names to well-known nonprofits to appear credible. Before making a vehicle donation, verify the charity’s authenticity and credentials, such as its 501(c)(3) status, to ensure your donation benefits a legitimate cause.

Hidden fees: Be wary of organizations that ask you to cover costs like towing or administrative fees. Reputable charities typically handle all fees, ensuring a hassle-free and cost-free donation process.

Title transfers and provides documentation: Failing to transfer the vehicle’s title properly could leave you liable for future issues involving the car, such as parking tickets or accidents. Ensure the charity you donate to handles the title transfer quickly and efficiently.

Exaggerated tax deduction claims: Some dishonest organizations lure donors by promising inflated tax benefits. Consult with a tax professional and review the Internal Revenue Service’s Donor’s Guide to Vehicle Donation to determine the deductions you can receive. Legitimate charities will provide clear information and documentation regarding your tax-deductible car donation.

Pressure tactics: Reputable organizations give you time to make your decision, while scammers often use high-pressure strategies to rush you into donating. A trustworthy charity will allow you to take your time, encouraging you to thoroughly research and choose a cause that aligns with your values.

Requests for sensitive information: Be cautious if a charity asks for personal details such as your social security number. Reputable organizations won’t need this information for the vehicle donation process.

Ensuring You’re Donating to a Legitimate Organization

Doing your research is critical in protecting yourself from car donation fraud. In your search, look for transparency. Reputable charities provide clear information about their entire donation process from start to finish. You can also use websites like Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to see ratings and testimonials from donors and partners.

For a complete walk-through of documents, title transfer, and tax receipts, read our Guide for Donating Your Vehicle.

Eggleston Opens New Facility to

Create a More Inclusive Environment

Earlier this year, Eggleston opened a new day program facility at 1728 Hearthside Ct. in Chesapeake. This new facility, in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake is centrally located to help create a more inclusive environment where the participants can have easy access to shopping, dining, parks, and other community-based activities. Eggleston’s former Chief Executive Officer, Paul J. Atkinson Sr. previously shared, “It is our priority as we grow to ensure our programs and services are inclusive and accessible for those we serve. The way we provide services to people with disabilities today compared to 30 years ago has changed, but the reasons behind them have not. We continue to empower and value the abilities of all persons, and their pursuit for an inclusive life. Eggleston has been a strong provider of services since 1955, and we are fortunate enough to have resources to invest back into our mission and the community.”

To honor Atkinson’s 35 years of service to the organization, Eggleston’s Board of Directors dedicated the new facility as the Paul J. Atkinson Center.

“This new property allows us to expand our footprint to meet the needs of the Chesapeake community and beyond with the hope we will continue to contribute positively to the community’s well-being, foster connections, and provide value the community can rely on.” – state Dr. Mark Carlson, Eggleston’s Chief Executive Officer

NATIONAL DAY OF

SERVICE AND REMEMBERANCE

In Honor of 9/11, Patriot Day

For many of us September 11th with forever be a day of remembrance for the tragic events in 2001.  To honor the sacrifices of our military, veterans, first responders and their families, a team from Eggleston partnered with Carry the Load and thousands of volunteers from across the nation to clean headstones and beautify the grounds at more than 60 VA National Cemeteries.

Carry The Load is a non-profit organization that provides active ways to connect Americans to the sacrifices made daily by our military, veterans, first responders, and their families. What started in 2011 as a grassroots effort by two veteran U.S. Navy SEALs to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day has now grown into a nationwide movement with people volunteering throughout the year to honor and remember our nation’s heroes.

Eggleston’s Warrior Bridge Veterans program is proud to support veterans with disabilities by connecting them to vital resources, services and employment. The Warrior Bridge program uses a person-centered approach to promote self-sufficiency through satisfying employment regardless of when they served or discharge status. Warrior Bridge is dedicated to bridging the gap between resources, support, and sustained employment for veterans with disabilities.
